If you do not know by now, Ashton Kutcher and Demi Moore recently launched their “Real Men Don’t Buy Girls” Campaign through their organization the DNA Foundation. There has been a lot of media buzz surrounding the campaign and even some debate over how effective it is in addressing the demand that fuels the exploitation and trafficking of children.
When I speak at an event, people often ask; “What can I do?’ In addition to giving some practical ideas of how people can engage with ending modern day slavery, I tell people to bring what they already have to the movement. Contributing their education, vocation, life experience, talents, finances, etc., can make a difference.
I think Ashton and Demi are doing just that. They are leveraging their public platforms, influence, relationships, technology, and yes…even sense of humor to provoke, challenge, and shed light on an issue that few want to talk about. The Real Men Campaign is designed to increase awareness and get people talking. And yes…awareness alone is never enough. But it is something. And if that awareness leads to effective action then we are one day closer to ending the trafficking and exploitation of children. I agree with Emerson who said; “An ounce of action is worth a ton of theory.”
Personally…I’ve never opened a beer bottle with a remote control. I’ve never shaved with a chainsaw. I’ve never made a grilled cheese sandwich with an iron. And honestly, if I snapped my ankle in half, coming down from a jump shot…I would probably just lie there in pain and not get up.
So...I’ve added my own thoughts to what I think a real man is:
Real men not only don’t buy girls, they don’t see ANY human being as a commodity or an object to be used for their own instant gratification.
Real men rebel against a culture that continually normalizes the objectification and exploitation of women and girls.
Real men treat women and girls with respect and champion gender equality, refusing to tolerate gender bias or discrimination.
Real men are proud of and not threatened by empowered women in their lives.
Real men raise their sons to respect women and girls by the way they treat their own wives, girl friends and daughters.
Real men raise their own daughters to be confident in the understanding that their value and worth (as girls…or as human beings for that matter) is based on who they are and not on their sexuality.
Real men empower their daughters to believe and know that they can be anything they aspire to be.
Real men love their daughters in a way that they grow up feeling safe, cared for, loved and cherished so they won’t have to look somewhere else to have those needs met, making them vulnerable to those with evil intentions.
Real men don’t abandon their families when the going gets tough or the “grass looks greener on the other side”, leaving their wife and children wondering what a “real man” really is.
Real men respect and appreciate vulnerability instead of take advantage of it.
Real men practice self-control.
Real men speak up, call each other out and hold each other accountable to all of the above.
Hopefully, campaigns and movements challenge and affect the way we live. And if we are ever going to see the end of the exploitation and trafficking of children, then men have to live differently. We have to LIVE like “real men.” And that’s the hard part. But that’s the part that will change everything. That’s the part that matters in the end.
The reality is that it’s easier to “walk it off” than it is to live a life worthy of being called a “real man.”
What would you add to this list? Finish the sentence: Real Men…

Not only are they "shedding light on an issue that few want to talk about," they're speaking to an audience (of real guys and potential buyers of sex) that us in the anti trafficking movement rarely speak to directly or effectively. Oh, and #RealMen listen.

Thank you, great piece. As a gay man, I found it a little lacking as it was written through a rather heteronormative lens that did not acknowledge the existence, or even the possibility of the existence of men outside the sexual mainstream and what it may look like for them to 'be real men'outside the standard nuclear family, but nevertheless I appreciated the piece as it got past many of the stereotypes and assumptions in our broader culture of what a 'real man' is while encouraging them to use their power to dignify the humanity of those around them. Love your work and what you're about

Real men look for opportunities to help the vulnerable. Real men don't abuse their power. Real men do not justify their actions through an entitlement mentality. Wow Rob, one of my favourite posts by you so far. The phrase above I liked the most is "Real men are proud of and not threatened by empowered women in their lives." Beautiful.

The thing I applaud about the 'Real Men' campaign is that it makes the subject palatable for the general public. Anyone that has worked in this area knows how soul killing the experience can be, the more you learn about the extent of what is really going on. I don't believe the general population could even handle knowing a lot of what's really happening out there...at the same time, they need to know enough to get INVOLVED. So there's the issue...educate, motivate but don't scare people off with it either. This is a great way to do just that.

I think you make a really valuable point here about the hetero-normative lens. It also does not acknowledge the fact that young boys are bought and sold for sex the same way girls are. Overall though I am so happy to them leverage their celebrity to bring awareness to the issue of sexual exploitation/human trafficking.
Ashton and Demi's efforts

Ashton and Demi's efforts as a whole are commendable. This "Real Men" campaign may change a few hearts, and for its intent it is to be applauded. But, it will still fail because it doesn't really deal with the problem of demand at all.
Two people that made their entire careers off sex appeal (who starred in movies titled "No Strings Attached", "What Happens in Vegas", and "Striptease") and organizations mostly made up of women ushering a campaign of shame aren't going to carry weight with men who seek illegal and secret solutions to problems they are already ashamed of, out of the sight of women and a culture they already feel rejected by. If anything, the shame will drive more of these men deeper into their bondage with this problem.
I desperately plead with my fellow Christian brothers and sisters to not encourage this campaign of shame. God has called us to live by the Spirit and not the flesh. This world that ignores Him and lives by the flesh is incapable of solving this problem.

Let me add, I am not opposed to making prostitution less culturally acceptable. I simply question how this campaign really affects the root of the problem of demand: the heart of the johns and whether the advertising funds could be better spent elsewhere.

Perhaps they have been changing or are starting to transform and God is doing a work in their individual lives and lives as a couple. Their past is their past and we all have screwed up at different periods of our lives and have to learn from them. I think God will speak to people in different ways at different times. Perhaps they are unaware that their sexual appeal in movies is hurting others, right now their focus is on how young girls are being harmed by grown men instead, and they are focusing on saving them from oppression (which God has called us to do). Let's be patient and pray for them, which will be certainly living by the Spirit of Christ.

I don't think the campaign was good at all. Yes, I understand humor, but it made it seem like human trafficking is not that serious. The subject is difficult to talk about, and that's why we need to talk about it. Trying to make it humorous and funny does not change the situation.

Real Men reject the current trends of society that says, "I am the most important person in the world, and therefore, my needs come before someone else's freedom or needs". Instead, they value others just as highly as they value themselves.

Seriously!!! I do commend them on such a campaign, but that doesn't make up for their direct involvement in promoting SEX. An earlier comment was made about the sexual content of the movies they've stared in. I have to agree with that comment. These movies influence young minds, even if unintended. On a more hilarious note: Is there not a 15yr gap between the couple? If he was 15yrs old, this would have been all over the news... >=)) I'm sure she's heard the term "Cradle Robber"...j/k Don't take it seriously, I just felt that THAT needed to be pointed out. I wouldn't want my son to get snatched up by a cougar, but I guess we are talking about Demi Moore here. =) Much love! Peace!

I understand the heart to help, it's a primary neccessity towards any real change. I may not agree with the way certain campaigns are run, but this one is aimed at a certain percieved demographic. What that demographic is hasn't exactly been defined and I think that's part of the controversy The problem has always been how to give accurate information without taking people past their point of being able to absorb it. You can actually see in a conversation about the realities of slavery, when the listener has reached their limit in being able to handle the awfulness of the problem and their eyes "glaze over". It IS possible to bend too far in either direction. It's a delicate line to walk that often needs to be adjusted for each audience. I'm grateful for their attempts, the time and money they're giving in the hopes of change. I hope it isn't wasted and doesn't lead to HT awareness "fatigue" or devaluation of the global effort. If I could add changes I'd like to see it less nebulous. "We" instead of "Real Men"; "don't allow", instead of the current tag lines, then a series of images or situations that can be unique and not neccessarily In. Your. Face. but don't leave the viewer wondering "what was that about exactly?" Most importantly, I believe I need to be out there actively doing something myself in order to have an legitimate opinion about someone else's attempts to do the same. There can be no armchair quarterbacks here. This is not a game.

Love the post! It's so hard to stand up and be able to stay with spreading the word of this terrible tragedy that goes on in such secrecy. I know I'm still working up the courage to admit this is real and stop shutting my mind down when it gets to be too much. It'll probably take a politician getting caught with a sex slave to really change the battle. If only the DEA were going after sex traffickers with the same gusto, but not the ineffectual results, when chasing drug dealers.
