In recognition of National Human Trafficking Awareness Day, I thought it would be appropriate to extend an invitation:

 “If your hearts ache and bleed, we want you, you will help us; but if you merely adopt our principles as dry theories, do let us alone: we have millstones enough swinging at our necks already. Further, if you join us merely out of a sense of duty, we pray you keep aloof and give place to those who leap into our ranks because they can not keep themselves out; who instead of whining about duty, shout ‘privilege,’ ‘ delight’!”

These words were spoken by Theodore Dwight Weld, a Connecticut abolitionist over 175 years ago. They inspired a generation to the fight against slavery.

I am continually infused with hope as I see so many, like you, joining the current fight to end modern day slavery. What encourages me most is not only the zeal of new abolitionists, but the strategic thinking, skills and resources you are bringing to the table, translating into effective action on behalf of the vulnerable and oppressed. And to top it off, the driving force behind this growing movement is the tenacious belief that one day slavery will end.

I hope a day like today strengthens that same tenacious belief in you. After all…this is not about “dry theories” or “duty”, but about justice. It’s about love. Martin Luther King Jr. said that “Justice at its best is love correcting everything that stands against love”.

Thank you for loving! Thank you for “leaping into our ranks”. We are in this together. What a privilege! What a delight!
