Prime Minister Hosts NGO's for Anti Slavery Day

In celebration of the 2nd Annual UK Anti Slavery Day, Prime Minister, David Cameron, invited NGO’s involved in the fight to end modern-day slavery to a reception at the House of Lords. 

Love 146, Care and Stop the Traffik were among the organizations in attendance. Anti-Slavery Week began with a media awards ceremony at the House of Lords on Monday, October 17th, for Anti-Trafficking groups, which was hosted by Lord Alton and presented by Damian Green, Minister of State for Immigration. It was an opportunity to recognize journalists, writers, film, radio, TV documentary makers, etc. who have produced articles, features, books, films, radio broadcasts or plays which were considered to have had a major impact in raising public awareness about human trafficking.  

Anti Slavery Day in particular, October 18th, saw many activities being carried out across the UK such from awareness raising flash mobs to art exhibitions. There was involvement from local councils to engage local communities in exploitation issues, which are often taking place on their own doorstep.

Gaz Kishere, European Operations Director for Love146, one of the NGO’s  involved, said “it has been an  important opportunity to use the nations calendar to further highlight that this is a highly current  issue and one which requires our full attention.  Not only this, it needs the full engagement and will of the Government to see the UK become a highly toxic environment for Traffickers.  Myself along with many others am concerned that there is an over focus on border control and migration, and insufficient attention paid to the deeply human issue of people being bought and sold as commodities along with their Aftercare, Reintegration and desire for Justice.”

The Human Trafficking Foundation (HTF) was largely responsible for initiating this week’s activities and has begun to create a collaboration space for many UK Anti Trafficking groups to come together and develop strategies that will influence Government policymaking and implementation. 

The week concluded with NGO’s attending a reception they were invited to by the Prime Minister to celebrate Anti Slavery Day on Wednesday 19th October.
