Love146 believes it is both our privilege and responsibility to respond to the Biblical and human mandate to act on behalf of the suffering, the vulnerable, and the oppressed. The Prayer Blog engages the power of faith and prayer to respond to that mandate. Our prayers are requests for help or expressions of thanks to a Being larger than ourselves. If you are a member of a faith community or a believer in the power of prayer, please check in or subscribe here to the Prayer Blog for consistant prayer requests and updates. Thank you for partnering with us in this way.

Passage to India and Sri Lanka

Our Director of Asia Prevention, Glenn Miles, left yesterday from Cambodia to visit our partners and networking collaboraters in India and Sri Lanka.  He will be traveling back and forth between India and Sri Lanka during July and August.

In India, Glenn will connect with the head of our Boys Reintegration and Research Project, which focuses on assisting youth who want to leave the massage parlor industry.  This project facilitates alternative vocational training opportunities, job placement, and microlending.  Glenn will also travel to some rural provinces with the project director to get a better understanding on why boys might leave their villages and get lured into the masage parlor industry.

In Sri Lanka, Glenn will help facilitate a South Asia Anti-Trafficking Network meeting.

Please pray:

+ for smooth connecting flights and zero complications with his double-entry visa!

+ for productive meetings in India, especially as Glenn and the project leader see to make trusting relationships in the rural villages

+ for a good turnout at the South Asia Anti-Trafficking Network meeting and that participants would come with useful resources that they could share with others.  Also, please pray that each person would feel comfortable with sharing openly about what is going well and where they need assistance.

From Survivors to Thrivers / Chains Be Broken

From Survivors to Thrivers : Love146 Safehome Update

Our Round Home in the Philippines continues to celebrate successful reintegration of rescued girls.  Currently, 2 of our reintegrated girls have received small grants to start small businesses in their villages. The girls have already been making small profits by selling fresh vegetables, cooked food, mobile phone cards, and handmade greeting cards.

Round Home has also recently welcomed three new rescued girls, all whom have recently given birth to babies.  There is much excitement in the home, as all the girls and staff are helping to care for the little ones.

babies!

In addition, 7 of the 10 girls living in the home asked if they could get baptized, and they have recently gotten baptized at a local church.

Please pray:

  • +that the reintegrated girls would grow in confidence as they develop healthy and sustained relationships with people in the community
  • +that their foodcarts would would draw customers, and their business would thrive!
  • +that the reintegrated girls would continue to develop their independent living skills,, especially with using their free time in a positive way
  • +for the new mothers living in the Round Home, that they would be filled with patience, love, and kindness for themselves and their children
  • +for the newly baptized girls, that their relationships with God would deepen and become a deeper well from which to draw strength, encouragement, and love

Chains Be Broken: Safe Harbor Law Passed!

We are so pleased to share that our prayers were answered with Connecticut being the third state in the country to pass a Safe Harbor law!  As a result, children under 16 cannot be charged with the crime of prostitution and 16-17 year-olds will be presumed to be victims of sex trafficking if they are found to be prostituting.  This is a significant victory as now children will not be held responsible for their own victimization.

Please pray:

  • +that the CT police chiefs would respond positively to the new law and make a priority of training the law enforcement in their regions to enforce Safe Harbor
  • +for the staff managing the Department of Children and Families hotline, that they would be able to ask the right questions to identify a potential victim of trafficking
  • +for Love146's role in helping to create educational materials to raise awareness in CT about our new law

Towards a Safe Harbor for Children in CT

You may have already been following our efforts to advocate for a Safe Harbor law in CT.  In short, Safe Harbor, S.B. 153, will protect any minor from being prosecuted for the crime of prostitution.  Rather, the children would be referred to social services and treated as victims of commercial sexual exploitation. In turn, the bill strengthens penalties for traffickers/pimps as well as the customers/perpetrators.

Today, the CT State Senate unanimously passed the bill!  We are on the brink of being the third state in the country to pass a Safe Harbor law. We have until May 5 to see it happen in this legislative session.

Please pray

  • for favor for this bill in the House of Representatives and that it would also pass.
  • that if passed, Governor Jodi Rell would sign it into law.
