URGENT INTERVENTION
The sexual slavery and exploitation of children requires immediate action. These projects protect children while supporting the needs of the children themselves.
Border Prevention
Love146 partners with Kone Kmeng to educate and intervene in the lives of children living in at-risk communities along the Thai-Cambodia border. We choose to work with Kone Kmeng because of their impact in reducing vulnerability of children to trafficking.
We address this specifically through the following projects:
• Blue Tent Project: This project works with a group of displaced peoples who were formerly evicted from a slum area of Phnom Penh and relocated more than one hour away. The relocation of the Blue Tent Community places them at higher risk of trafficking. Working with a local church, Kone Kmeng equipped the community to create infrastructure in the form of a well and latrines. Our partnership has enabled education for children, livelihoods training for youth, and workshops for adults addressing domestic violence, healthcare, sanitation, and hygiene. We continue supporting government advocacy concerning the rights of the Blue Tent Community.
• Children at Risk Transformation Project: Kone Kmeng focuses on reducing the vulnerability of children in communities by providing resources, consultation, and encouragement to local churches. This includes funding, monitoring, and consulting on specific projects aimed to better the community and reduce risk for children. It also includes conducting training on child protection and assisting partners in setting up a child protection policy.
• Save the Children Project: This project works with a local pastor to educate children with the end goal of reintegrating them into the public school system. Further, by providing a dormitory for students, this project reduces the risk of trafficking as children travel the long distance between their homes and school. Workshops are conducted for parents that address child labor, domestic violence, displacement of families, drug abuse and addiction, and health issues. Kone Kmeng also provides micro-loans to families for the purpose of creating micro-enterprises and establishing livelihoods, thus reducing the vulnerability of children to trafficking.
Cambodia Border Officers Project
Working with the Cambodian non-government organization, Cambodian Hope Organization, Love146 enables volunteers from local organizations to act as “watch-dogs” to contribute to the early detection of trafficking, while observing trends and patterns. The Border Victim Support Team works in conjunction with local border authorities. The Team’s efforts include:
• Increasing the number of volunteers and training for volunteers
• Strengthening the reintegration process for previously trafficked children
• Enabling children to attend school permanently
• Increasing the knowledge of local authorities regarding trafficking laws and their implementation
• Awareness raising to target groups that include scavengers, beggars, children addicted to drugs, cleaners, cart pullers, scavenging buyers, etc.
On a daily basis, the Border Victim Support Team addresses the following issues:
• Safe Immigration and border crossings
• Health, hygiene, and the spreading of HIV/AIDS
• The Law of Anti-Trafficking in Persons and deception of traffickers
• Dangers associated with drugs
