On college campuses across the country, there are students that decide to spend their precious free time in between classes to join the effort to end human trafficking and exploitation. Love146 Task Forces are groups dedicated to learning and taking action against trafficking in their community, together.
Here are 10 reasons why you should start a Love146 Task Force on your campus from Cassie, the leader of the Freedom Force at UW Whitewater:
1. Make a Difference.
One thing we all have a finite supply of is time, so what we spend our time on matters a lot. There are so many different activities you could contribute to; however, working to end modern-day slavery is something that truly makes a difference. By getting involved with Love146, you will receive stories about real survivors that you have helped.
2. Build Relationships.
Through my time leading a Love146 Task Force, I have made some of the best friends of my college career. My fellow Task Force members were some of the most passionate, caring, and empathetic people I have ever met. We connect over an issue that is deeper than what other friends connect over, making these relationships so rich and valuable.
3. Have Fun.
While fighting child sexual exploitation can be hard and can get you down, there are so many hopeful ways to spread this message. Through light-hearted fundraisers during finals week to showing documentaries to 24-hour advocacy events, some of my best college memories have been with my Task Force doing something fun that really matters.
Being a part of a Love146 Task Force pushed me outside of my comfort zone and allowed me to grow. As the founder and the leader, I learned about my strengths and weaknesses; I learned about what I could and couldn’t take on. Most importantly, I learned how to lead, work as a team, and ask for help.
Being involved in a Love146 Task Force provides many opportunities to lead. From leading meetings and educational modules to organizing events, there’s always an opportunity to step up!
Spending your time doing something you care about and that really matters can show others that individuals can make a difference. Inspire others around you to give a little by first giving a little yourself.
7. Gain Experience.
There are opportunities for everyone in a Love146 Task Force! No matter what your strength is, there is a role you can play. If you’re artistic, you could design posters. If you’re social, you could organize a gala to benefit trafficking survivors. If you’re a writer, you could write blog posts or opinion pieces for local papers. A Task Force has an opportunity for everyone!
By emerging into this cause by joining a Task Force, there are so many opportunities to learn. The Love146 websites and many other books, articles, conferences, and more offer ways to deeply learn about this too-little-known global problem.
9. Empathize and Hope.
By learning about human trafficking and exploitation, your heart will break again and again. You will hear stories and meet people who have seen some of the darkest parts of society. However, you will also see some of the most beautiful and human examples of hope.
10. Change the World.
The actions we take have a ripple effect. While you may not see it at the time you’re doing hard (and sometimes boring) work – like folding hundreds of brochures or printing and posting flyers – you never know the amazing result that these actions could have. YOU have the chance to make the difference, so step up and take it! If we are the future generation, it is up to us to help make this world what we envision it to be. By starting or joining a Love146 Task Force, you are able to make a difference and change the world.
