Recently it was Yamile’s fourth birthday, and her friends in our safehomes in the Philippines knew just how to celebrate. They threw a party, complete with balloons, cake, and a big teddy bear. For an hour, they ate, sang, laughed, and joked with her. Then they sat down together and shared their birthday wishes with her. This is what they said:
“I hope that all of your wishes will come true. I hope that you will persevere to achieve your dreams.” — Hugo, age 14
“I hope that you will continue to experience beautiful memories.” — Gloria, age 12
“I hope that you will grow joyful, healthy, and kind. We all love you!” — Mae, age 14
“You’re important to a lot of people and loved here in the safe home. My birthday wish for you is a good and long life.” — James, age 14
“May your days be filled with laughter, happiness and love.” —Sonia, age 10
“I hope you have many more birthdays! I love you, Yamile.” — Maddie, age 12
Yamile has lived in the Round Home for a year and a half now. She joined us at age 2, as a survivor of child trafficking and exploitation. She started pre-K this year, and she’s doing so well there. She enjoys swimming with her friends, taking trips in the bus, and walking to school with a Love146 employee and with Peter, her friend from the White Home. She’s also great at making people laugh!
She still has a long road to walk ahead of her. We echo the words above: We hope she will grow to have a strong, clear voice. We hope she will finish her studies and achieve her dreams. We hope that day by day, the wounds of the past lose their grip on her body and heart.
But we know that it takes more than wishing.
It takes doing. It takes love that is put into action. Medical pioneer Florence Nightingale felt strongly about this: “Feelings waste themselves in words; they ought all to be distilled into actions.”
Our monthly donors are taking that action: investing for the long haul in Yamile’s future — because we all want to help these wishes to come true.
We’re in it for the long run with them … because you are, too.
Our goal this September is to see 146 new people become monthly donors. So far, 89 people have joined us. Only 57 to reach our goal! Will you join children like Yamile for this journey of hope?
