As the Tread on Trafficking season kicks off, we’re noticing activists across the country putting the active in activism. Love Wins! is a group of four California moms headed by Laura Hagen. They’ve set a goal to run 146 miles in 46 days — which works out to running about a 5k everyday.
“As soon as I set this goal I thought ‘What have you gotten yourself into?’ — I haven’t even exercised in a decade!” -Laura Hagen
Laura is 41, mom to a 10-year-old daughter, and has been a supporter and follower of Love146 for years. But it wasn’t until a month ago, after reading a blog by Rob Morris, that she had her “aha!” moment and could no longer just sit idly by.
Within 24 hours, Laura had created a fundraising page and scheduled to hit the pavement running in two weeks. Her passion was contagious and soon inspired three friends — Sarah, Randie, and Aja — to join the movement with her.
Laura’s now completed her goal of 146 miles… in only 21 days — less than half the time she expected! You’d expect her to to be ready to kick up her feet and relax? Not quite.
“I feel like I can’t stop — it does something to you. Once you become a part of great cause it adds fuel to the flame.”
Laura is continuing to run for the remainder of her time, treading alongside her team as they finish their miles.
This is Laura’s first time taking action to end child trafficking. This is her first time exercising in over a decade. Can you say ‘zero to hero’?
Although she’s more than exceeded her athletic goals, Laura’s still short of her fundraising goal.
“I have such a heart for these kids. I want them to know they are loved even by people who don’t know them. And that we’re going to fight for them. I just want to play a part in it — no matter how small my part is I just want to believe it’ll make a difference.
If I can do it anyone can. I hope it inspires people to just go out there. I know everyone has a heart for children, wanting to protect them and fight for them. It’s a matter of just doing it.”
