Every Young Person Deserves a Safe Place to Stay
In our work combating child trafficking, we work with adolescents who’ve had to make really tough decisions that no one should have to make, least of all a child. Shelter is a basic need. Just like other basic needs, when youth lack a safe place to stay, their vulnerability to trafficking increases significantly.
Of the youth we’ve worked with in our US Survivor Care Program, 74% had a history of AWOL (being missing or running away.)
We’ve worked with youth who’ve been kicked out of their homes. We’ve worked with youth who’ve said things like “I decided to go with him, and I knew what would be expected of me, but that seemed like a safer bet than staying in this park where I have no idea what might happen to me.” We’ve worked with youth who were being sexually assaulted at home by a family member, and they felt it was better for them to run away with someone they thought cared about them, but who actually exploited them.
Meeting Basic Needs
Food, housing, shelter, and clothing are all basic needs that children need to live and to thrive. When a child’s basic needs are not met, they will seek other ways to get what they need to survive. Traffickers leverage this vulnerability to groom, recruit, and exploit children. Sometimes traffickers trick youth; other times, they tell them what will be expected. No child should have to be in that situation. As adults, we have a responsibility to keep children safe. And when they are not safe, we have a responsibility to get them to safety.
Your support creates safe alternatives
Child trafficking happens when there are gaps in safety and care. When you donate to Love146, you help close those gaps. Love146 provides survivors and vulnerable youth with a compassionate professional who will be there when they need help. Love146 works alongside caregivers and other professionals to help youth meet their basic needs, find safe housing, and build long-term skills to process their victimization and reduce their vulnerabilities. Every child deserves a safe place to sleep, and every survivor deserves the chance to heal. DONATE HERE
