This movement of people who agree that no child should be trafficked is a diverse crowd, and activists have different perspectives and experiences that inform how they see and respond to this issue. Understanding these common approaches can help us better collaborate and work collectively to see the end of trafficking.
4 APPROACHES TO ANTI-TRAFFICKING WORK
-
Criminal Justice Approach: This method focuses on arresting and prosecuting traffickers. It involves utilizing law enforcement, incarceration, fines, and penalties to deter and punish traffickers.
-
Public Health Approach: This perspective aims to reduce the environmental factors that increase people’s risk for trafficking. It focuses on reducing poverty, inequality, and other widespread issues that increase people’s vulnerability to victimization in the first place.
-
Human Rights Approach: This approach emphasizes that every individual deserves basic human rights. It advocates for laws, systems, and services that ensure these rights are upheld, providing a foundation for everyone to live safely and with dignity.
-
Moral Approach: This perspective focuses on specific beliefs around how people should best live their lives. It emphasizes creating laws and services to help people live by these values and is often (but not always) intertwined with faith-based work.
OUR APPROACH AT LOVE146
At Love146, we integrate the human rights and public health approaches in our work. We believe in balancing these perspectives to provide holistic survivor care and prevention efforts.
COLLABORATION AND RESPECT
However, we also believe in collaborating with partners who take the criminal justice and moral approaches. Different approaches may sometimes conflict, but it is essential to foster dialogue and respect across differences. In today’s polarized world, it’s easy to stick to our own camps and try to solve this problem in isolation from people who see solutions differently. But at Love146, we believe that ending human trafficking will require working together, combining all our strengths towards our common goal. By respecting and collaborating with each other, we can make a greater impact and move closer to a world free from trafficking.

About Love146
Established in 2002, Love146’s vision is the end of child trafficking and exploitation. Love146 connects the dots to understand how vulnerability operates in the lives of children, and intervene both to care for survivors who have been harmed and ultimately to prevent the harm from happening in the first place. This work is achieved through the power of relationships and collaboration, listening to those with lived experience and diverse backgrounds, scaling proven practices, and challenging the systems that leave children vulnerable. Recognizing that the end of child trafficking cannot be achieved by only one person, organization, perspective, or approach, Love146 strives to set a big table in order to foster collaborations and collective will. Love146’s core commitment is to do what is best for children. Learn more about our work at https://love146.org/.
