After being first sold by a trafficker at age 12, Remy spent years with Love146 recovering at the Round Home and has since been reintegrated into her community. She’s now married and has a child. As with all survivors (all humans, really), she has good days and bad days. We wanted to share her writing with you, unfiltered.
Last fall, Remy received a bike donated to Love146 from Specialized Bikes. This is a piece she wrote recently in response:
We had to deal with different kinds of problems when my husband and I started a family, such as personal adjustments, marital issues and financial problems. My husband has no permanent job, so we are doing our best to maximize our financial resources. That’s why last fall, my husband and I were very happy when we received a gift from Specialized Bikes. Honestly, I prayed for a long time to own a bike, which my family especially my husband, could use because our place is very far from town. Also, there are few vehicles for transport, especially at night in our place, so we find it difficult to go to the market or pharmacy. So, when Love146 gave us a bicycle from Specialized Bikes, I was very happy and thankful because it was an answered prayer for me. It was a blessing for our family. From the day I owned it until the present, the bicycle has been a very big help for us because we don’t need to spend money to pay for our transportation fare. Aside from that, we are able to save time because we don’t need to wait for a bus for almost an hour just to reach the town. My husband also uses it when applying for laboring jobs. Actually, he also uses the bike every time he goes to the Round Home whenever he works there as a gardener.
The bicycle is not only able to help us economically but it also saved the life of my son. When my son had a high fever, my husband used the bicycle to rush to the drugstore in town to buy his medicine. Every time I remember that incident, I always think, “if we did not have the bicycle, maybe something bad would have happened to our son because there was no means of transportation in the middle of the night.”
The bicycle is already part of our family and it is a very big help for me and my family. And in return, we are taking good care of the bicycle. We clean it regularly and shelter it in a safe area and regularly check it for maintenance purposes. The bicycle makes our life easier and comfortable, that’s why we are very thankful to Specialized Bikes for giving us this bicycle.
