If you’re not familiar with “Deflategate,” Google it. It even has its own Wikipedia page. It’s a “scandal” involving the accusation that the New England Patriots used underinflated footballs in their AFC Championship game against the Indianapolis Colts to give them an edge. A long investigation took place and just this week the NFL determined that there was enough evidence to warrant a one million dollar fine against the Patriots.
I walked into my office this morning and was made aware of an online fundraising effort by Patriot fans to raise money to help pay the one million dollar fine. As of the moment of me writing this, over a thousand fans have rallied to raise almost $14,000 in the first day.
There is a part of me that is actually impressed by the generosity and dedication of so many people, but there is also a part of me that is a little perplexed at what I think may be a misguided generosity.
I live in New England. I took my youngest son to his first Patriots game this past Fall. (He’s a huge Pats fan).
So I’m not a Patriots hater. I just don’t think the Patriots need those funds that badly.
But we do…. For almost the same amount of funds already raised to help pay the Patriots fine ($14,000), Love146 can provide education for all of the children in the Love146 Round Home for a year! And maybe we can provide a few properly inflated footballs for all of these children as well!
