We met Sonya at our feeding center funded by our donors when she was 6 years old. We noticed red flags of trafficking, and created lots of time to listen to her. In time, she shared about things being done to her for online audiences of pedophiles. The details of this case are so horrific that her bravery to speak out may have actually saved her life. With your support, we fought to get her to safety and worked with authorities to apprehend those exploiting her.
Last year, as Sonya was going to testify, she shared, “I will be sad as I remember again what he did to me, but I will be happy if I know that he’ll be in prison and he won’t be able to do to other children what he did to me.” Today, one of Sonya’s exploiters is behind bars awaiting trial, and the other was recently convicted and sentenced to 20 years in prison.
Sonya recently told us: “I am building my life, piece by piece. Despite everything that happened to me, I believe there’s a wonderful plan for my life. I am determined to unravel the future waiting for me.” Sonya’s bright future would not be waiting for her without your support.
