This summer, we’re putting the spotlight on activists who will tread on trafficking and use exercise as a way to fight trafficking! Learn how you can join them and learn how you can put the active back in activism today…
For Tara Munro and her community, the fight against child sex trafficking isn’t about solving problems in distant brothels and third-world countries. They know that trafficking happens in their country, their state, and even their neighborhoods.
“Students are passionate about this issue. They want to educate friends. They want to point out that trafficking is real and that it can happen to anyone.”
Tara works in the Resident Life department at Cairn University, a Christian university in Pennsylvania. She finds herself regularly conversing with students about everything from roommate problems to how they’re adjusting to life in college. But sometimes, those conversations are another way in which Tara’s reminded that students need to know the warning signs and be on their guard.
“There have been times where I’ve had young women tell me of incidents where men have approached them in restaurant parking lots, asking questions and inviting them to their car or house. They’re connected to this issue in a very personal way and they wanted to do something to fight it.”
The result was the university’s annual Hope 5k. In only its second year, the Hope 5k had nearly 60 runners (including the school’s cross-country team!) come out to support — raising over $500 in the process!
“Education was definitely a part of the event. While there’s passionate students, some of the student body isn’t as aware as it needs to be. They contextualized it to the local problem of what sex trafficking could look like in their city.”
“We’re already looking forward to next year.”
Tread on Trafficking is about putting the active back in activism. Use exercise for something greater by running, swimming, biking or jogging — all while fighting child trafficking!
