Recently I went through security at Manchester airport. I was heading back to New York after meeting with our UK team. During the usual security check I was asked what I do for a living, so I shared about Love146 and our work with trafficked and exploited children around the world.
After completing the formal questions, the seasoned security official let me know that one week earlier a suspected human trafficker was pulled off a flight prior to departure. He couldn’t give details, but I was thankful for the information. I know there’s been an increase in training over the years by many entities (including local charities, the UK Government and individuals at various UK airports) on how to spot the signs of trafficking. Posters hang in the immigration lines explaining the signs of trafficking, raising awareness for the general public as they enter the country.
In the case of this suspected trafficker removed from a flight, all the trainings and awareness paid off.
This brief insight by the security official reminded me yet again that while we all desire to see immediate impact, most of our efforts take time to yield results. When we do see results they certainly should be celebrated — so, well done Manchester Airport security team for putting your training into action to protect and defend those who need it!
