A few weeks ago, this story came up on our Facebook newsfeed:
News of Hazel’s birthday plans reached all the way across the globe to the Love146 safe homes in the Philippines.
The kids there heard about what this girl in California wanted to do. And they wanted to write her some birthday messages:
“Big Sister Hazel is a generous big sister and I want to be like her when I grow up. She thought of us before she thought of herself. I was so happy to learn that we’re important to her. Thank you, Big Sister Hazel!” — Peggy, age 7
“First of all, I really want to thank God for creating Hazel and the other Love146 sponsors. They are kind-hearted, loving, and generous people. I also want to thank Hazel because instead of using her money to have a fancy birthday celebration, she gave her money to make us happy and that is a great thing for us. I admire her because not all people would do what she did. Hazel is a wonderful person. I want to wish her a happy birthday and tell her that I love her very much with all my heart. I’m also asking God to let your dreams come true. You are a blessing sent to us by God.” — Crystal, age 10
Birthday parties for the kids in the safe homes are a very, very big deal. Many of them have never had a birthday party before coming to Love146, so when we celebrate them, we really celebrate: spaghetti, cake, games, balloons, the works. So it must have meant a lot to them to see someone trade a big birthday party for a chance to support other kids.
“Almost all children would want to have a party, but I admire Big Sister Hazel because she thought about us before herself and she wants to make us happy and help us. For me she is beautiful because she is generous.” — Sonya, age 11
“She’s an inspiration to children like us. I hope that there will be more children like her.” — Marivel, age 13
From all of us to you, Hazel: Thank you for reminding us that generosity and compassion — even towards people you’ve never met — are things worth celebrating.
